Linney’s reaction shook me. I was clutching my hands together when I met Conway in the hallway.

“It could be trauma,” he offered without prodding. “Perhaps her subconscious is protecting her the only way it knows.”

“Maybe.” I didn’t feel qualified to offer a medical opinion. “Or, for her at least, very little time has passed.”

He arched an eyebrow. “How is that possible?”

That was a very good question. “I don’t know. I guess maybe I should do some research.”

“On what?”

“I just said I don’t know. That’s why I have to do research.”

“Sorry.” He held up his hands in a placating manner. “I wasn’t trying to upset you. I was simply curious.”

I had to bite back a snarky retort. He was only doing his job, I reminded myself. It wasn’t his fault that my head was so scattered. “I’m sorry. This thing has just thrown me.”

“I think it’s thrown us all. There’s no need to apologize for being frustrated. We’re all in that boat.”

Watching him rub his forehead, it struck me that he was conflicted. That seemed a fair reaction given the circumstances. “Have you considered putting them in the same room? Linney and Frieda, I mean.”

“Yes, but that could cause a great deal of stress for both. Imagine Linney rushing into that room, calling out for her mother, and getting no response. On the flip side, imagine being a woman who remembers nothing and having a fourteen-year-old child referring to you as her parent. The child expects the mother to protect her, and yet the mother can’t feel the emotions necessary to care for her child.”

Wow. He’d given this a lot more thought than I had ... which meant his responses were more measured than mine. “You’re right.” I felt like a bit of an idiot. “Things could go well, but they’re just as likely, if not more likely, to go horribly wrong.”

“It’s going to be a balancing act. We’re hopeful that Frieda’s memory returns without us having to jog it. That would be the best possible scenario. If that doesn’t happen, we will be forced to act. I don’t believe we’re there yet.”

“It’s your show, and you seem to be doing a good job. I’ll get out of your hair.”

“You’re not in my hair. Without you, we might not have realized the true scope of Linney’s issues. I have a call in to a well-regarded child psychologist who lives on the island. I’m hoping to get her in the next hour or two to speak to Linney.”

“That will be good for her.”

“I certainly hope so. Right now, it’s a waiting game.” His eyes were speculative as they looked me up and down. “You look a little pale. Are you feeling okay?”

The last thing I needed was him contacting Galen to say there was something wrong with me. “I’m fine. She just ... shocked me. I didn’t know how to respond, which only goes to show that I shouldn’t have gone in there in the first place.”

“I don’t believe that. She responded to you.
